Certificate in Health Law

The Hall Center’s Graduate Certificate in Health Law provides an opportunity for JD students to specialize in the health law and policy curriculum. A Graduate Certificate will be awarded to enrolled JD candidates who complete at least 6 approved courses totaling at least 15 credit hours in health law courses (2 required core courses, 2 advanced health law courses, 1 elective health law course) and complete a capstone writing, practical, or skills course. Students must also maintain a 3.2 GPA in the Health Law, research or experiential capstone courses applied toward the Certificate.

Experiential or Research Capstone Courses (1 required)*:

*Note: Any paper, note or comment submitted to satisfy the Experiential or Research Capstone must be submitted to and approved by a Hall Center co-Director.

**Note: Additional prior approval required from a Hall Center co-Director. Credit from a course (e.g., a seminar, law review, or an externship) that otherwise satisfies the Capstone requirement MAY count towards the total credit hours required for the Certificate up to a maximum of two hours credit.

Health Law Certificate Declaration

Students who have decided to pursue the certificate must complete an Intent Form. Students will be encouraged to declare their intent between the end of the first year and the beginning of the second year (day students) or during the second year (evening students). In the semester in which they complete the concentration, students must file a Certificate Application to show the course work and written work that satisfies the concentration requirements. All forms should be turned in to the Coordinator of the Center for Law and Health for processing. In the case of a student who takes more than the minimum number of qualifying courses the student’s best grades in the qualifying courses will be used to calculate his or her health law GPA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am a 1L/2L who has not registered for the Concentration in Health Law and want to pursue a Graduate Certificate in Health Law. What must I do?

You must fill out an Intent to Complete a Graduate Certificate in Health Law form. Once you complete the form, please file with the Registrar/Recorder and the Coordinator of the Hall Center for Law and Health.

Q: I am a 2L/3L (evening) student and have completed the Intent to Complete a Concentration in Health Law and want to pursue a Graduate Certificate in Health Law. What must I do?

You must fill out an Intent to Complete a Graduate Certificate in Health Law form. Once you complete the form, please file with the Registrar/Recorder and the Coordinator of the Hall Center for Law and Health.

Q: I am a graduating 3L student and have completed the Intent to Concentrate form. What are my options?

You have two options:

  • OPTION 1: If you wish to receive the Graduate Certificate in Health Law, you must fill out an Intent to Complete a Graduate Certificate in Health Law form. Prior to graduation, you must complete an Application for a Graduate Certificate in Health Law (2013 version).
    • NOTE: The requirement to take Introduction to Health law and Policy  course will be waived if you have taken Finance and Health Care Regulation. The requirement to take Business and Legal Aspects of Health Care Organizations will be waived if you have taken Closely Held Business Organizations. Please also note that you are required to have a 3.2 grade point average in your health law courses (including these substituted courses).
  • OPTION 2: If you wish to receive a Concentration in Health Law, then you will need to complete the Health Law Concentration Completion form (as well as the Intent to Concentrate form). If you opt to receive a Graduate Certificate in Health Law but fail to meet the GPA requirement, you may reapply for the Concentration in Health Law prior to graduation.

Q: Am I eligible for both the Graduate Certificate in Health Law and a Concentration in Health Law?

No, you are not eligible for both ? you are eligible for only one. After 2013, the Health Law Concentration will be discontinued and only the Graduate Certificate in Health Law will be offered.

Recognition of the Certificate or Concentration

Students who complete the certificate will receive a separate degree certificate. Students who complete the concentration, documentation of concentration will be included on their official law school transcript.

Note: Students may earn a maximum of two graduate certificates. Only core courses may be counted toward both certificates. Students must inform the advisors of both certificates of their intent to seek two certificates.
