Joint Degrees
The IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law offers several joint degree programs in conjunction with other Indiana University schools. Through participation in these programs, students can earn a JD degree, along with a master's degree in an additional area, in a shorter time than it would take to earn the two degrees independently.

JD/MBA: Doctor of Jurisprudence/Master of Business Administration
This program synthesizes legal and business issues for students who want to practice law involving business clients, work in a corporate law department, or work in a government agency regulating business. Candidates usually spend the first year in law school and then take graduate business courses and law courses concurrently for the remainder of the program.
Requirements: 80 credit hours of law courses; 39 credit hours of business courses.

Students in this program are prepared for understanding and dealing with the legal and managerial frameworks of public service, nonprofit, and quasi-governmental institutions. In the final year of the program, a research paper on a topic in both areas of study is supervised by faculty advisors from both schools.
Requirements: 84 credit hours of law courses; 34 credit hours of SPEA courses; research paper.

Students prepare to become health lawyers or health care administrators-professionals who understand the legal and administrative structures of health services. Students are required to attain a specialization and complete a research paper on a topic in both areas of study, supervised by faculty advisors from both schools. Candidates usually complete the first 31 credits in the law school and divide remaining coursework between the two schools.
Requirements: 82 credit hours of law courses; 45 credit hours of Department of Public Health courses; research paper.

Designed for students who want to understand and shape the role of the law in promoting public health or in regulating the financing and delivery of health care services. Professional opportunities include government health or environmental agencies, private firms, and universities. Candidates will study law courses their first year, mostly public health courses their second year, and primarily law courses in their third and fourth years, including internships in health or environmental law. Students are required to complete a research paper on a topic that addresses both law and health. This paper satisfies both the Advanced Research and Writing Requirement in the School of Law and the concentration project in the Department of Public Health.

The joint JD/MD program is designed to allow students to obtain dual JD and MD degrees in six years instead of seven years. It also provides students with the unique opportunity and valuable experience in interdisciplinary work in the areas of public health, health policy, and life sciences. Students are required to gain independent acceptance to the Robert H. McKinney School of Law and the Indiana University School of Medicine.
Requirements: 84 credit hours of law courses; 6 credit hours of medical courses.

The demand for law librarians with dual degrees in law and library and information science has increased dramatically in recent years. The joint J.D./M.L.S. degree prepares students for careers as law librarians in academic, governmental and law firm settings. Candidates study law courses during their first year, adding courses from the School of Library and Information Science during the remaining three years. Students are required to participate in a law library internship and write a research paper covering a topic that is relevant to both areas and supervised by faculty members from both schools.

JD/MSW: Doctor of Jurisprudence/Master of Social Work
Advocacy is central to the mission of both the law and social work professions. Education in both disciplines provides professionals with unique knowledge and skills to meet the challenges of serving vulnerable populations and combating injustice. The required law school curriculum for this joint degree program includes the law school's first and second-year required courses and the course in professional responsibility. Candidates spend their second year of the program primarily in the School of Social Work working on the required core curriculum for the MSW degree. Students are required to complete a concentration in the School of Social Work in the second through fourth years of the program, which includes a social work practicum/internship. Candidates are also required to write a research paper on a topic that addresses the fields of law and social work and that is designed to meet the advanced writing requirements of the law school.

JD/MA: Doctor of Jurisprudence/Master of Arts in Philosophy with a concentration in Health Law and Bioethics
The joint J.D./M.A. with a concentration in Health Law and Bioethics provides a unique and valuable perspective on the field of bioethics through combining the philosophical study of bioethics with a legal education. Candidates usually spend the first year in law school, adding courses from the IU Department of Philosophy during the second year. In addition to the basic required law school courses, students in this program will be required to complete the requirements for the Concentration in Health Law. The capstone project for this joint degree program will be a paper in a topic that addresses the fields of law and bioethics. This paper will satisfy both the advanced research and writing requirement at the law school and the thesis/research project in the Department of Philosophy.
