IU-I Law Librarians Receive Research Grant

An Online Bibliographic Services/Technical Services Joint Research Grant has been awarded to Dragomir Cosanici, Head of Reference, and Chris E. Long, Cataloging Librarian, both at the Ruth Lilly Law Library at Indiana University School of Law, Indianapolis. Their project, "Citation Practices of the Indiana Supreme Court and the Indiana Court of Appeals," is a study of the two courts' citation practices. The research will be published in a peer reviewed legal publication.

The grant provides support for technical services law librarians to perform research that will enhance law librarianship in service to our clients and is available each year. Applicants must be members of AALL and must show evidence that the research will benefit technical services law librarianship. The goal of the Joint Research Grant Committee (JRGC) is to award grants in a single year ranging in amount of no more than $1,000.

Library Displays

"Thanksgiving for the Abundance … of Exam Prep Resources" – November's lobby display – features print titles on preparing for law school exams and printouts from online exam prep websites. Please "Take One" of the handouts that list all the websites included in the display. Each month this display area has a new exhibit relevant to legal education and topics.

Faculty publications are displayed in three exhibits in the library. The largest exhibit is inside the main door of the library. The other two are in wooden display cases adjacent to the stairs on the 2d and 3d floors of the library. Please look at the variety of research topics of our faculty.

New titles added to the library's collection within the past few months are promoted in display cases outside the Woodard Room (lawyers' room) on the 1st floor. If you are interested in learning about other new titles or in suggesting titles for the library to purchase, please consult the Selected New Acquisitions Lists and suggestions link on the library's website:

WHAT DO REFERENCE LAW LIBRARIANS DO?

Law librarians are highly trained professionals who work in various legal settings, including law schools, private law firms, and government libraries. Reference law librarians are available to assist you with your legal research and can help you locate and use the materials in the Law Library. Generally, legal reference librarians can provide assistance if you need to know:

  • where to find material on a specific law-related subject
  • how to use the material in the Law Library
  • how to interpret specific citations to statutes, case law, legal periodicals and other legal reference material
  • whether other resources are available to complete your research, including licensed databases and the free Internet
  • how to borrow books from other libraries to complete your research, if necessary
  • how to begin, continue or end your research on a legal topic

Reference librarians also provide group tours of the Law Library upon request.  At the Ruth Lilly Law, the Law Librarians participate in classroom legal research instruction, and assist the law faculty with legal research projects.  If you have a research question related to one of your courses or a project for a faculty member, seek to write a paper for a class or law review, or have any additional reference questions; please do not hesitate to ask.

During the school year, the reference desk (274-4026) is staffed Monday - Thursday, 9 AM - 9 PM, Friday and Saturday 9 AM - 5 PM, and Sunday 12:30 PM - 9 PM.

Do you need to borrow books from other Indiana University libraries?

Use Request Delivery!

Try the Request Delivery system available when you log on to IUCAT, IU’s online catalog. If you aren’t sure how to use Request Delivery, ask at the circulation or reference desks. (Note that Bloomington’s Law Library does not participate in this program.)

Do you need to borrow material that isn’t available on IUCAT? Ask for a Book Request form or an Article Request form at the circulation desk. We’ll borrow the material for you.

Ryan T. Schwier is a circulation and reference intern this fall. He graduates from SLIS in December. Ryan is Chief Operations Officer at the law firm of Starkey Law Group, P.C. He hopes to enter law school in fall 2005.

SLIS Law Library Interns

Two students from IU’s School of Library and Information Science are interns in the Law Library. They assist with the services the library staff provides to law students, faculty and other patrons while they learn about law librarianship.

Law librarianship – especially a JD combined with a masters degree in library science – offers professional opportunities throughout the country in law schools, law firms, court libraries and other settings. Talk to a librarian about this career path!

Donna Close works with Government Documents. She will complete her MLS in May 2005 and may pursue a JD or PhD. Her professional experience is in real estate, property management and historic properties.

Remote Access to Legal Resources

 Now Available

You can access the Law Library’s databases from a new site – your home computer! Go to the Law School’s homepage and click on Electronic Research. On the Electronic Research page you will find links to Databases by Title (Annotated and Unannotated) and Databases by Category.  Some of these databases, such as Legal Trac and Wilson Web, have been accessible only in the Law School building.  Remote access is now possible through a proxy server – thanks to Kiyoshi Otsu. Due to licensing restrictions, a few databases will not be accessible remotely.

When you click on the title of a database, the Central Authentication Service (CAS) page (below) pops up. Insert your ADS Domain User ID and password here and click login for access to the databases. Please let Professor Anspach know if you have any problems with this new service.

United Nations Collection Update

The Ruth Lilly Law Library is a full United Nations Depository. Thus, the library maintains an extensive collection of UN monographs, statistics and electronic services. The United Nations collection consists of three major parts which patrons can access:  (A) the Mastheads, (B) microfiche and (C) shelved publications.

Electronic Access to UN Materials

Recently the library converted to the electronic United Nations Official Documents System (ODS) for the masthead collection, official records and United Nations reports since 1992. To access this system from the Law Library’s website, click on “Electronic Research” and either “Databases by Title” or “Databases by Category” to find “United Nations Research.” Select “Documents.” Other selected documents, such as official records and United Nations reports, as well as resolutions passed prior to 1992, are available in either monograph or microfiche format.

United Nations documents in Readex (the library’s vendor) microfiche format are also available in the Law Library. They are sent periodically ranging between 6 months to 2 years after the date of official UN publication. For an electronic index of the Readex microfiche collection, please consult the Access UN link on the library’s webpage under United Nations Research at http://www.indylaw.indiana.edu/library/unitednations.htm, then select the Access UN (Readex) link.
