Welcome

On behalf of the entire staff, it is my pleasure to welcome all new and returning students to the Law Library. We hope you will find that the Library provides you with a comfortable setting for legal research and study. All staff members work very hard to provide you with excellent library support and services. We want to make your law school experience as rewarding as possible and are always happy to help you with your legal research needs and to provide assistance in accessing and using materials and information. Please do not hesitate to ask for assistance, as helping you is what we enjoy doing the most.  When you are learning how to conduct legal research, we expect to see you at the Reference Desk often. Please remember that librarians don’t think there is any such thing as a dumb question, unless it is the question you didn’t ask.

For detailed information about policies, location of materials, electronic database services, etc., please see the Law Library web page at http://indylaw.indiana.edu/library/library.htm

To help us better meet your needs, we encourage your comments and suggestions. If you have any problems with Library services or have suggestions for improvement, I am always happy to speak with you either in my office in the library, by phone at 274-3411, or via e-mail at juanspac@iupui.edu.

When asked about her long tenure with Indiana University School of Law Library – Indianapolis, Jay’s response is always the same: “The law library (the law school) has been good to me and my family. I can not imagine working anywhere else.”

Marilyn “Jay” Wright, Library Administrative Assistant, celebrates 35 years with IU. She began her tenure with Indiana University in August 1969 when the campus was called Indiana University Downtown Campus and consisted of three buildings located at 518 N. Delaware (where the Federal Building now stands). Jay was originally hired as the circulation/reserves supervisor in the then Downtown Campus Library.

Jay was on the staff of the undergraduate library for eight years before transferring to the Law School Library as the U.S. Government Documents Assistant in April 1976. In September of 1976, she was promoted to circulation/reserve supervisor and in February 1989, she was promoted to the position of Library Administrative Assistant.

Jay served as one of the law school/library’s Staff Council representative for three consecutive terms during the 1980s.  Jay received the Staff Council’s Spirit Award in May 2000.  In 2003/2004, Jay was a participant in the Administrative Support Professional Series. Jay is currently serving on the IUPUI Office of Women Advisory Council.

Janice Watson, Senior Cataloging Assistant, celebrates her 30th year with IU. She began working at Indiana University (Indianapolis Campus) in August 1969 as a student worker in the library. In 1975, she was appointed full-time in the Technical Services Department. In 1977, she transferred to the Law School Library to work as Senior Cataloging Assistant, the position she currently holds.  She was one of the moving forces toward automating the technical services operations at the Ruth Lilly Law Library. In addition to working in technical services in the law library and university library, she also has cataloged part-time at the Dental School Library and the INCOLSA Processing Center.

In addition to receiving the Spirit Award, Janice has been actively involved with the Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive and the Backpack Attack Drive for underprivileged families and students for many years at the law school.

During the time she was working at the law school library, Janice obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, completing it in 1986. When not working, Janice enjoys spending time with her grandson.

Janice received the University’s Spirit Award this year, an honor bestowed on those staff members who exemplify the spirit of IUPUI.

Sharon Pino, Senior Acquisitions Assistant

Sharon celebrated her 10th anniversary with the Law Library in May 2005!

Law librarians Richard has mentored are currently employed at the Indiana Supreme Court, University of Toledo School of Law, and Yale Law School.

Reference Librarian, Richard Humphrey, celebrates his 10th Anniversary with IU School of Law in August. Prior to his employment here, he worked at the Athenaeum of Ohio Library, Cincinnati Law Library, and as law librarian at the Covington, KY offices of Greenebaum, Doll, & McDonald.  Richard began working in libraries during his college days in Georgia and has always been an avid library user.

As a reference librarian, he tries to impart to students an appreciation for the precision and care that an expert legal researcher must learn, and an understanding that the best resource is the one that most precisely and efficiently answers the question, whether it be in print, microform, or electronic format. Former students return time and again to express their appreciation for the skills they learned in his classes.  As a mentor, Richard has enjoyed shepherding many students through librarianship generally and law librarianship specifically. In fact, his niece is currently enrolled in the Library Science Masters program at IU Bloomington.

Richard says he loves his job and can't imagine doing anything else.

Presentation at Central States Regional Legal Writing Conference

Dragomir Cosanici, Head of Reference, and Joel Schumm, Clinical Associate Professor of Law, will present on the value of citation-based studies (a/k/a bibliometrics) at the Central States Regional Legal Writing Conference, September 23-24, 2005 at the Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis. The main focus of the presentation is to discuss the Indiana Court of Appeals as well as the Indiana Supreme Court’s reliance on primary authority, other persuasive authorities as well as case briefs. Answers to these and related questions will provide important information to consider in instructing our law students to research and write. The presentation is based in part on the recent Cosanici/Long publication on the citation practices of Indiana’s two highest courts.

Government Documents Librarian on Executive Board of Indiana Library Cooperative

Wendell Johnting, Catalog/Government Documents Librarian, was recently elected to the Executive Board of the Indiana Cooperative Library Services Authority (INCOLSA) for 2005-2006.  INCOLSA is the statewide network providing leadership in cooperative activities for Indiana libraries, and its member institutions represent more than 2,200 libraries throughout the state. Johnting was also Treasurer of INCOLSA from 1989-1990. His biography is also listed in the most recent editions of Who’s Who in American Law (14th ed.) and Who’s Who in America (60th ed.).

Librarian Moderates at Law Libraries Annual Meeting

Chris Long, Catalog Librarian, moderated the OBS/TS-SIS Research Roundtable at the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Law Libraries in July. The Roundtable is an open forum for technical services law librarians who are interested in publishing journal articles. The program hosted Monica Martens from the National Indian Law Library. Ms. Marten spoke about a project funded by an AALL/Aspen Research Grant – the creation of a subject thesaurus of Native American legal terms and the grant application process as well as subsequent reporting requirements. Attendees were given other suggestions for locating funding sources and discussed a proposed "research coach" program in which new librarians interested in doing research could be matched with more experienced writers. There was also an open discussion period during which participants could share ideas for possible research projects, talk about concerns and obstacles in the writing process, and ask practical questions such as where are the best places to submit their work.

Head of Reference Receives Grant from Indiana University Library Association

Dragomir Cosanici received a $1,200 InULA Publication Grant to study the citation practices of the Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky Supreme Courts. The aim of this research study is an article that will analyze the publication-based data of the four courts in order to forecast the future educational needs of law students and law faculty, and the information resource needs of legal practitioners. The main goal is to determine the comparative usage of primary and secondary legal sources by the four courts. The study will more accurately focus the instruction of first year law students in various legal research methods based on the courts’ citation analysis. Finally, the article will study the impact of citations on essay bar exam questions in the past decade to understand to what extent bar examiners rely on recent Supreme Court decisions for their essay bar exam questions.

Librarian Attends Intensive Teaching Program

Reference Librarian Debra Denslaw participated in Immersion ’05, an intensive 4-1/2 day program of teaching and education for instruction librarians sponsored by the Association of Research and College Libraries. Attracting more than 70 academic librarians from the United States and several other countries, the program focused on learner-centered teaching, active learning, teaching and learning styles, and assessment.

Book Review Published in International Journal of Legal Information

Dragomir Cosanici’s book review of Justice in a Time of War: The True Story Behind the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia by Pierre Hazan has been published in 33 International Journal of Legal Information 133 (Spring 2005).

Librarian Elected Secretary of Indiana Library Organization

Wendell Johnting was recently elected Secretary of the IN-SIRSI Unicorn Users Group for 2005/2006.  SIRSI Unicorn is the integrated library system that Indiana University libraries (and other selected libraries in the state) use to maintain an online public access catalog. The system also supports circulation, system administration, and technical services functions. The most current meeting of the IN-SIRSI was held at IUPUI University Library and the law school on August 12, 2005.
