What is RSS?

RSS (Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it.

Why RSS?

Combined with an RSS news reader or similar software, RSS is a powerful tool allowing readers to easily keep abreast of the latest news and information from multiple web sites. Users save time by not needing to visit each site individually and ensure their privacy by not needing to become a member at each site and not needing to give out their email address for subscription.

What do I need to do to read an RSS Feed?

RSS Feed Readers and News Aggregators

News readers commonly display headlines in a small application that appears on a reader's computer desktop. RSS news readers differ from standard web browsers in that headlines are updated continuously, without any need for the reader to refresh the page. A single news reader can display headlines from dozens of different web sites.

Clicking on a headline in an RSS news reader opens that story in the reader's preferred web browser. RSS can also be used to add content to a personal web journal, or web log (blog).

Where can I find an RSS news reader?

There are many free news readers available. Most are available as desktop software that you download and install on your computer. You can find these programs by using your favorite search engine and searching for "news feed reader". My Yahoo! and Google both offer methods for displaying RSS feeds. In addition to that, many Web Browsers are also beginning to add in RSS news reader features. For instance, IE7 will let you display rss feeds in nearly the same way you do your favorite bookmarks, and users of  Mozilla's Firefox can access RSS feeds from within their web browser (by clicking on the RSS icon prompting them to subscribe to the RSS feed).
